US Cannabis Guide for Tourists: Everything You Need to Know

The United States is home to the world's largest legal cannabis market. With over 24 states that have fully legalised recreational use and more than 38 states offering medical cannabis programmes, the country has become the global leader in regulated cannabis within just a few years. For British tourists, a trip to the US offers a rare opportunity to experience cannabis under legal conditions — but the rules are complex, and a mistake can be costly. This guide covers everything you need to know before you go.

The World's Largest Cannabis Market

The US cannabis market generates billions in annual revenue. California alone has seen more than $5 billion USD in legal cannabis sales. Colorado was the pioneer — the first jurisdiction on earth to fully legalise recreational cannabis in 2012. Today, there are over 10,000 licensed dispensaries across legal states, offering a product range that puts European options to shame.

Crucially: in the US, cannabis law is state law, not federal law. At the federal level, cannabis remains a Schedule I controlled substance — classified alongside heroin. That means federal land, federal buildings, airports, and the territory between states are all governed by federal law. What is perfectly legal in a given state can become a federal matter the moment you cross a state line.

As of 2026, the following states allow full recreational use for adults aged 21 and over:

What British Tourists Can and Cannot Do

Permitted:

  • Purchase from a licensed dispensary with valid photo ID (UK passport or driving licence accepted)
  • Consumption on private property (rental accommodation, if the landlord permits)
  • Consumption in licensed cannabis lounges (Nevada, Alaska, selected Colorado venues)
  • Possession up to the state limit (typically 28 grams of flower or equivalent)

Strictly prohibited:

  • Crossing state lines with cannabis — even between two legal states. This is a federal offence
  • Public consumption (parks, streets, vehicles, federal buildings)
  • Consumption in hotel rooms unless explicitly permitted
  • Taking cannabis to any airport — airports are federal territory
  • Bringing cannabis back to the UK — a serious criminal offence
  • Purchase under the age of 21

Shopping at a US Dispensary

For British visitors, a dispensary visit is a genuinely eye-opening experience. These are professional, well-lit, secure shops that feel closer to a pharmacy than anything from the black market. Well-known chains include Cookies (40+ locations, premium streetwear aesthetic), Harborside (pioneer dispensary in Oakland since 2006), MedMen (the "Apple Store of cannabis"), Trulieve (largest US chain, 100+ locations) and Green Thumb Industries (Midwest-focused, Rise Dispensaries brand).

Always bring your passport (21+ entry only). Cash is often preferred — federal banking restrictions mean many dispensaries have limited card payment options. Ask the budtender for advice — they are trained professionals.

Products and Prices

  • Flower: $8-20 per gram (Oregon often under $5)
  • Pre-rolls: $5-15 each
  • Edibles: $5-25 per pack — do not underestimate the dosage
  • Vape pens: $25-60
  • Concentrates: for experienced users only

THC levels in the US are significantly higher than anything British tourists may be used to — 20-30% THC in flower is standard. Edibles can take 1-2 hours to take effect. Start very low.
